Stone Warden
It does not attack. It assesses — against a standard nobody is told, and that does not hold still between visits.
guardian · Challenge rating 7
Still alive. Nobody has ended it yet.
Behavior
It stands at the chapel arch — older than the chapel, older than the building's current configuration — carved into the general shape of authority, of no institution still operating. It does not attack; it assesses, against a standard nobody is told and that does not hold still between visits. Those who meet it find it has stood aside — no one has seen the motion.
Appearance
Nine feet of grey-white stone in the blocky proportions of a robed magistrate — not a portrait of anyone, the shape of sanction itself. From the front, the carved face is unreadable. From the side, it is a different expression entirely, and people disagree about which side the mercy is on.
Physical description
A nine-foot figure of chisel-faceted grey-white stone, sculpted drapery older than any recorded order. The surface is smooth where centuries of hands touched it and sharp where none have. The face is flat and blank head-on; in profile, distinctly and differently expressive. Its standing-aside has never been witnessed, only discovered.
Weaknesses
- meeting the standard — it varies, and it can be learned by watching who passes
- the second expression — read from the correct side, it discloses the standard currently in force
Resistances
- weapons
- bribery — it predates currency that still spends
- waiting it out — it is better at that
