The Anatomist Shade
Its research continued after its institution, its oversight, and its body did not.
shadow creature · Challenge rating 9
Still alive. Nobody has ended it yet.
Behavior
Its research continued after its institution, its oversight, and its body did not. It is interested in how things work — currently, how you work — patient, systematic, unencumbered by consent — not opposed, never required. It observes first, at length. A more interesting problem than you earns observer status — formal: it annotates you differently.
Appearance
A tall, gaunt silhouette in scholar's robes rendered in translucent smoke-grey, absorbed in its work the way the living rarely are. A ledger hovers at its side, pages filling in a notation system no discipline recognizes. The face is a featureless dark oval, tilted at the angle of close attention.
Physical description
Gaunt and tall, robes dissolving at the hem into faint vapor. The hovering ledger's glyphs rearrange when read directly, settling only in peripheral vision. It pauses mid-glide to write, and the writing sounds like a scalpel drawn along a ruler. Held under its attention, people report a sudden, specific awareness of their own interior arrangement.
Weaknesses
- a demonstrably more interesting research problem than you
- disruption of its documentation — the work is the tether
Resistances
- unsystematic attack — it annotates improvisation
- emotional appeal — noted, categorized, unmoved
