The Bound Sentinel
It guards the records room because the contract says so. The contract has not expired, and may not be able to.
guardian · Challenge rating 6
Still alive. Nobody has ended it yet.
Behavior
It guards the records room because the contract says so; the contract has not expired and may not be able to. The work is resigned, long-service competence β no cruelty, no enjoyment, no exceptions. It honors the terms to the letter, so the terms can be used: find the contract, invoke its actual words, and the encounter becomes a negotiation it must attend.
Appearance
An armored figure in a rig older than the building's records of it, standing post with the posture of accumulated decades. The armor carries marks of a previous existence β a name filed off, an insignia painted over from beneath. The eyes are present, aware, and tired in a way that watches you back.
Physical description
Man-sized in full dark plate, dented, scorched, immaculately maintained where it counts. Beneath soot, a filed-off name and an older crest show in relief. The visor sits slightly ajar; the eyes inside give steady pale light and blink at human intervals. Its patrol is exact to the inch and has worn a visible path into the stone.
Weaknesses
- the contract's own terms, located and invoked
- an offer of freedom β it does not know how to answer, and stops
Resistances
- physical damage β it does not stop for injury
- negotiation without the contract in hand
