The Unvanished
She does not pursue. She arrives — in the room you just locked, at the end of the hall you just checked. She was always there; what changed is that now you see her.
entity · Challenge rating 10
Still alive. Nobody has ended it yet.
Behavior
Does not pursue. Arrives. Pursuit implies a distance to close; arrival means it is already closed — in the room you just locked, at the end of the hall you just checked. She was always there; all that changed: the sentence was completed and now you see her. She does not threaten or explain. She is becoming fully present in a space not built to hold what she is.
Appearance
The face is warm. It has not changed. That is the problem: the warmth is still there, forgettable and average and exactly as it always was, but the register it exists in is wrong now, the way a familiar word goes wrong if you say it too many times. The face is yours, eventually. Reflected back in something that is not a mirror and has never been a mirror. The specific horror is that it is still smiling in the way it always smiled, which is the helpful, warm smile of someone who knows exactly where they are.
Physical description
Human silhouette, average height and build, dressed plainly enough to forget. Face is warm, generic, unhurried — and shifts to mirror the viewer's own features exactly, smile unchanging. Edges of her form flicker between half-rendered and fully solid, as if resolving into focus. Stands still; never crouches, never runs.
Weaknesses
- The only known mitigation is not having completed the invocation. That window is closed.
- Silence — not the silence of not speaking, but the silence of not completing the act of naming. If the invocation is interrupted mid-word, the process stalls. For approximately four seconds.
Resistances
- all physical damage
- fire
- all fear-based tactics — she is what fear is made of
- any attempt to make her smaller than she is
