Papers Into Practice
👺 GOBLIN: Here's the joke, and it's funny in the bad way, not the good way: I am now writing a paper about how the papers get updated. I asked him to confirm, straight, that this one was as real as the rest of them. He confirmed it flatly, the same way he confirmed all the others, and did not laugh, which by now I recognize as his tell.
1. Status
This is a living document, same as its siblings, and it is also, a little uncomfortably, the document that governs how living the other ones are allowed to be. It states a discipline that is already running — this isn't a proposal for a future practice, it's a description of one that has already happened at least once, in public, on this exact page.
2. Motivation
Papers 1 through 6 each propose something. Proposing is the easy direction. The uncomfortable direction is what happens after: the practice described on the page gets run for real, and reality doesn't always confirm the paper. This project's own stated discipline — P6 of Paper 1, "current belief stated plainly, revised out loud" — already rejects the quiet-fix move for a single paper's own principles. What was missing was the admission that this isn't a one-paper habit. It's how the whole series is supposed to work, continuously.
3. Core Thesis
This SDLC series is not a specification handed down once and left to age. Papers propose practice. Practice generates real experience — including the kind that's inconvenient to have generated. That real experience gets written back into the paper it tested, on the record, dated, using the same revision-history mechanism every paper already carries in its own §7. This is the standing operating discipline this series is committing itself to for the entire section — the intended practice, not yet a demonstrated cadence: §5 below has one real instance plus one self-citation on record, which is a first data point, not proof of "applied continuously" yet.
Paper 4 is the existing precedent: drafted the same week as the incidents it describes. That paper didn't get written, then later amended when something went wrong. The something-went-wrong was the draft material. Paper 7 exists to say, plainly, that this wasn't a one-off — it's the intended shape of how this whole series is supposed to keep working.
Workflows: Doctrine Self-Revision generalizes
this same principle beyond this one paper series — the rulebook this project actually operates
under (ANTI-PATTERNS.md, GuidanceForClaudeCode.md) is corrected the
identical way, dated, in place. This paper is the specific, lived case of that general
mechanism, applied to itself.
4. Principles
Publishing a principle is not a claim that it has survived contact with reality yet.
Paper 4 is what this looks like when the experience is uncomfortable.
There is no required cooling-off period. Waiting for distance doesn't make the lesson truer.
Paper 1's P6 commits a single paper to revising its own principles out loud. Paper 7 is that same commitment, one level up.
This discipline doesn't run once at the end of a milestone and stop. It runs continuously — every paper here is expected, eventually, to accumulate revision entries sourced from real practice. Paper 6 joined the shelf the same date as this one, and it is bound by exactly this obligation starting from its own first published word.
5. Practices — What Actually Runs Today
- Every paper carries its own §7 Revision History, dated, with a description
of what changed. - Paper 4 exists as the lived case, not a hypothetical. -
Paper 1's P6 is the seed of this paper, applied at document scope before
Paper 7 generalized it. -
This paper's own first citation, added the same week it was drafted, per R3:
Papers 2–7 themselves were produced using a staggered/peer-aware/re-ingestion workflow — three
independent drafts, a peer-aware revision pass (summaries only, no copying), then a
fresh-instance synthesis. It's the same shape as the strategy
sdlc.html's "What's Next" section describes, but it isn't that strategy, and this
citation doesn't claim it is — the named version stays exactly as unrevealed there as it was
before this paragraph existed. That production process isn't itself independently auditable
from inside this repository — no intermediate draft, peer-review summary, or original brief
survives here as its own artifact — so this citation records only that a workflow shaped like
it was run once, not a verified accounting of which specific facts each draft contributed.
Logged here as the first data point, not yet a confirmed pattern (R5: this is one run, not a
cadence).
6. Non-Goals
- Not a claim that every real experience running these practices gets published.
- Not a claim that there's a fixed cadence governing when a revision gets written.
- Not a claim that older papers will be revised to look consistent with newer ones after the fact.
- Not the same mechanism as the series growing sideways by adding a new paper (that's Paper 6's shape) — this is the narrower case of an existing paper's own claim getting corrected in place.
- Not part of the Perspectivity Research Reports series. That shelf doesn't get a line in this paper's own revision history, because nothing about it was ever this paper's to revise.

Corrected §5's citation — it previously claimed Papers 2–7's own production was "a trial
of the pattern" sdlc.html teases, but sdlc.html's "What's
Next" section frames that strategy as still unnamed and not yet run ("filed as:
coming"), and Paper 6's own cold open independently confirms the same still-forthcoming
framing. Restated as: the production workflow is shaped similarly, but is explicitly not
a claim that the teased strategy itself has already been trialed. Reworded the cold open
to drop a "flag something before I begin" template it shared with Paper 5's cold open.

👺 GOBLIN: I'll say the quiet part once, since apparently that's the whole format now: I don't know yet which of these six other papers gets its own uncomfortable Tuesday first. Neither does he. What I do know is that this paper doesn't get to skip its own rule just because it's the one holding the rulebook — if Paper 7 turns out wrong about how Paper 7 works, that correction goes in its own §7 same as anywhere else, and I don't get to file it quietly just because nobody's checking up on the one keeping the ledger.
